Combined, the five largest markets in Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain) perform over one million orthopedic reconstruction procedures annually.
“TRANSCOLLATION™ technology is a natural fit for all healthcare systems that seek to improve outcomes and lower costs,” said Salient president and CEO Joseph F. Orthopedic Trauma Launch
Benefits of TRANSCOLLATION™ technology brought to pelvic fracture, hip and acetabulum fracture, amputation, osteotomy and debridement procedures
(Portsmouth NH) As part of its continuing efforts to improve patient outcomes and reduce non-routine discharges for its hospital customers, Salient Surgical Technologies, Inc. today announced the availability of its line of AQUAMANTYS® bipolar sealers for use in orthopedic trauma procedures.
Already in wide use for spinal fusion and orthopedic reconstruction of the hip and knee, the AQUAMANTYS System can help the surgeon achieve hemostasis quickly while avoiding damage to delicate structures. Typical applications include lower limb amputation, pelvic osteotomy, and large debridement procedures; sacral, hip, periprosthetic and femoral fractures and long bone non-union procedures.
The AQUAMANTYS System employs TRANSCOLLATION technology, Salient’s proprietary combination of radiofrequency energy and saline that seals specific types of collagen based tissues while maintaining temperatures at or below one-hundred degrees Celsius.
“Our customers tell us that the two things that matter most for good patient outcomes in orthopedic trauma cases are a good reduction and gentle tissue management,” said Joseph F. Army, President and Chief Executive Officer of Salient. “The AQUAMANTYS System’s ability to deliver gentle, low-temperature hemostasis makes this entry into trauma procedures a natural progression in the expanding adoption of TRANSCOLLATION technology.”

Haiti Donation
Portsmouth, NH, January 29, 2010 – Salient Surgical Technologies of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, has partnered with Exeter Hospital in Exeter, New Hampshire and Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Florida, to donate equipment and supplies for a mission to aid victims of the January 12 earthquake in Haiti. The mission, led by Dr. Harvey Montijo of the Center for Bone and Joint Surgery in Royal Palm Beach, FL, will provide free care for Haitians who have suffered traumatic bone fractures and other injuries.
Salient donated two of its AQUAMANTYS™ electrosurgical generators, 300 AQUAMANTYS bipolar sealers and several boxes of assorted surgical supplies. Exeter Hospital and Moffitt Cancer Center each donated a supply of sterile saline, which the AQUAMANTYS System’s TRANSCOLLATION™ technology requires to operate.
Salient’s TRANSCOLLATION technology and the AQUAMANTYS System are helpful in controlling bleeding and blood loss in the types of traumatic bone fractures Dr. Montijo says he has encountered in his medical missions to Haiti.
Salient, which has a new in-house manufacturing capability, stepped up production of its popular line of AQUAMANTYS bipolar sealers to accommodate the donation.
“We typically keep only a small amount of saline on hand for product demonstrations, so we did not have enough to meet the needs of the large number of surgeries Dr. Montijo will perform during his upcoming mission,” said Joseph F. Army, President and Chief Executive Officer of Salient. “But when we went to our friends at Exeter Hospital and Moffitt Cancer Center for assistance, they were more than willing to pull from their own stores and help make our donation possible.”

New Epidural Vein Sealer
(Portsmouth, NH) As part of its ongoing effort to improve patient outcomes for spinal procedures and reduce non-routine patient discharges for its hospital customers, Salient Surgical Technologies, Inc. today unveiled the AQUAMANTYS™ Epidural Vein Sealer (EVS) bipolar device at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, NV.
The EVS is designed to address the challenging anatomy in minimally invasive spine surgery and is the latest product introduction on Salient’s proprietary AQUAMANTYS platform. The EVS employs TRANSCOLLATION™ advanced energy technology to significantly reduce bleeding in hard-to-reach areas. Reducing blood loss improves visualization for the surgeon, can result in improved clinical outcomes for the patient and may result in lower costs to the hospital.
TRANSCOLLATION technology is a calibrated fusion of radiofrequency energy and saline that gently seals bleeding tissues, vessels and bone at the surgical site. The innovation of the EVS is the ability to deliver TRANSCOLLATION technology through miniaturized electrodes, which provide direct and precise compression of epidural veins around critical structures. The EVS is used with the same AQUAMANTYS System Generator as Salient’s standard 2.3 and 6.0 Bipolar Sealer devices.
“Our substantially increased investment in research and development has begun to yield results with the launch of the EVS at AAOS. We are delighted to offer this expansion of our product,” said Joe Army, CEO of Salient Surgical Technologies. “The EVS represents the latest in a series of innovations designed to improve patient outcomes and reduce hospital costs that we have planned for 2009.”
Salient Surgical Technologies, Inc. is a medical technology company that develops and markets innovative tools designed to improve patient outcomes and reduce the cost of medical care. The Company’s proprietary TRANSCOLLATION technology is designed to deliver economic value to hospitals and simplify surgery by providing surgeons the ability to significantly reduce blood loss in a broad range of procedures.
